About the Film
What Happened to the Seeker — The India Movie is the complete 22-minute film originally presented as Act Two of STO Union’s multidisciplinary theatre production What Happened to the Seeker (2015).
The film follows the Seeker, a woman whose life has been shaped by the revolutionary ideals of the 1960s and their promises of freedom and liberation.
Still searching for enlightenment, she travels to India, following the infamous hippie trail in reverse. Along the way, her search becomes increasingly troubling. The freedom she pursues is made possible through questionable transactions, often at the expense of others.
Yet these contradictions do not appear to interfere with her pursuit of enlightenment.
As the journey unfolds, the Seeker begins to confront the possibility that seeking itself may not be what it appears to be.
The film examines the desire for freedom, the inequalities that can underlie that desire, and what it might mean to stop searching.
About the Original Production
What Happened to the Seeker was a multidisciplinary theatrical experience combining performance, visual art, puppetry, film, sound and an exhibition.
Audiences travelled through different environments, encountering stories, objects, performances and images before gathering for the second half of the production, which included The India Movie and a final live performance.
Fiction and non-fiction moved alongside one another, creating a work in which different narrative threads crossed between past and present.
