The vision behind the Hopes and Fears Assembly

The distance between your hopes and your fears is creative.

The Assembly is a gathering where you can sing, draw, move, connect, write, and create.

It’s an open space for artists, students, and independent companies to explore new ways of sharing space, in response to 2024’s Nuit Blanche theme by curator Laura Nanni: Bridging Distance.

Hopes and Fears Assembly is like a ‘live art hive’, with artists taking up different parts of the space. It features a few of STO Union’s ‘tiny experiences’ which are small live art projects that have toured to different places in different contexts. Their roots are from the theatrical medium. The other artists joining STO Union come from different mediums: performance, visual arts, lens-based art, live art, sonic media…we’ve worked hard to bridge the distances in our practices, mediums, budgets and industries in order to be able to work together.

Artists have created different accessible experiences for the public to engage with. The evening changes with time as the Rythm Corp captures bits and pieces of sonic and visual information during the first part of the night and transforms it into a new experience for the second part, bridging distances in time.

There are multiple generations of artists in the Assembly, highlighting the importance of sharing experiences in the arts as an always necessary bridge.

In this Assembly, the relationships are with others, yourself, and creative energy. The bridge is in body, the distances are within it, and creativity is the force that does the bridging.

All together, we can inspire each other to remember how creativity makes us feel and then see what happens.
